ON-LINE CAMPGROUND RESERVATIONS IN CLARK CO.'S FUTURE

It won’t happen this year, but the Clark County Forestry and Parks committee is moving forward with plans to go to an on-line campground reservation system.

The county has 600 campsites at seven different campgrounds.

Forestry and Parks director Mark Heil says the driving factor is convenience for customers.

"Right now, when individuals submit campground reservation requests, they might not hear back for several weeks to a month to whether they have the site reserved, confirmed, or not," Heil says. "People are constantly wondering where they're at."

The committee got a demonstration of the system last week. It’s currently used by Chippewa and Portage counties, and has received rave reviews.

On top of the convenience of immediately reserving a site with the click of a mouse, web users will also get a glimpse of the site itself.

"Once you're to the website, you can see if campsites are reserved or available, you can reserve the campsite with a credit card. You're also able to view a picture of every single campsite," Heil explains.

Last week, the committee elected to move forward with its exploration of the on-line reservation system. It would cost the county about $18,000 up front. If all goes well, it could be in place for the 2010 camping season.
