DOG AUCTION PROTEST
Thursday, March 12th, 2009 -- 12:03 pm
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

Despite frigid temperatures, a few dozen people were in Thorp Wednesday to protest what is believed to be the only dog auction in Wisconsin.

200 dogs were for sale; it’s believed many came from so-called puppy mills. These large-scale commercial breeders are in the crosshairs of some animal lovers, who say the dogs are raised in deplorable conditions.

Protestors said the publicity might be paying off. For the first time, the auction had an age and size limit.

Rep. Jeff Smith plans to introduce a bill that will help regulate mass dog breeding in the state.
