GREENWOOD COMMITTEES LOOK FORWARD

The Greenwood School Board will have some big decisions to make in the coming year.

The district’s $500,000 revenue cap exemption will expire after next school year. The district has citizen committees looking at other issues, like the future of the elementary school building.

"We've had four groups working. The facilities group continues to look at our future: do we need one building, should we be in two buildings?" explains Superintendent Tom Nykl, "We're within a month or two of finishing that."

The groups are also forming an 8-year plan for the district that should be complete within "the next week or two."

There's also a study underway examining the pluses and minuses of converting some elementary school space into a daycare.

"There has been discussion on a daycare. We're moving ahead on a study. There is so much (to look at). We haven't looked at liability, we haven't looked at how this co-mingles with the school versus standing alone. There's a lot of thinking that has to be done here," Nykl says.

The finance and personnel focus group will recommend what to do when the referendum expires next year.

"They're going to be making a recommendation to the board. It's probably likely there will be an option for a referendum there," Nykl predicts, but adds the current economic crisis could affect the board's decision.

Nykl says his district is watching with some interest what happens with the Loyal referendum slated for a vote next month.
