PLEASANT ENROLLMENT NEWS IN GREENWOOD

An area superintendent thinks things might be looking up for his district.

It’s no secret the Greenwood School District has struggled in recent years with their budget and enrollment. They almost consolidated with Loyal, but voters in both districts said ‘no.’

But, Thomas Nykl says open enrollment applications for next year paint a brighter picture.

"13 in, 10 out," Nykl reports, "That's a remarkable change. I think last year it was 9 in and 28 out."

So, in the current school year, the district lost a net of 19 students; next year, they’ll gain 3.

Aside from the psychological boost, Nykl says the news will have a financial impact.

"The rule of thumb is a little over $6,000 per child that you're going to be receiving from the school that they open enroll out of," he notes.

Over the past couple years, the district has been tweaking curriculum, making a notable switch from teaching math.

"We went to a traditional math program in the middle school and the high school. This year, we've been studying our reading program and we're looking at making some really good, balanced decisions on reading in the future in our elementary schools," Nykl says.

Around 200 district residents have taken part in a committee process looking at the future of the district. They’re about ready to make some key recommendations, we’ll tell you about them on Friday’s newscasts.
