NWS: LOW RISK OF FLOODING

It’s been a long, cold winter… but, there is some good news.

The National Weather Service in La Crosse says there is below-average risk of flooding due to the Spring snow melt.

Todd Shea says our February mini-thaw we experienced a couple weeks ago got rid of most of our snow cover.

"Any chance we can melt away that base we had from earlier in the winter certainly helps with Spring melting," Shea says.

While there’s always a chance, forecasters don’t see any big snow events in the next couple weeks.

Soil in most areas can easily accept some extra moisture.

The one wild card could be ice jams.

"An ice jam occurs when you get a warm up and ice starts flowing in some areas, but not others," Shea notes, "We have had these warm-ups and re-freezes in some areas."

While the overall risk of flooding is below average, Shea says the risk of localized flooding due to ice jams is above average.
