Icy roads are blamed for two accidents this morning in Wood County. They’ve left three people injured and one person dead.

A Marshfield man is dead and his mother is in critical condition after an accident on USH 10 in the Town of Rock, southwest of Marshfield. It happened at around 5:30 a.m. as the pair was traveling to work at Nasonville Dairy.

According to reports, a pick-up truck driven by 24-year-old Ryan Vandeberg of Marshfield was traveling westbound on USH 10. Vandeberg hit a patch of ice when attempting to pass another vehicle. The truck entered the ditch, rolled once and struck a tree.

Vandeberg was pronounced dead at the scene.

His passenger, his mother Sharon Verkilen, was transported by ambulance to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield, where she is listed in critical condition.

Vandeberg was a graduate of Granton High School.

Just a few miles north of that fatal accident, and just about 45 minutes later, another 2-vehicle accident sent two people to the hospital.

According to the Wood County Sheriff’s Department, two vehicles were traveling eastbound on County Highway “H” near Robin Rd. in the Town of Lincoln.

The first vehicle slowed when its operator saw another vehicle in the ditch.

The trailing vehicle struck the first vehicle from behind.

The vehicles were driven by 44-year-old Margaret Smith of Willard and 45-year-old Jodi Pflughoeft of Loyal. Both were taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield.

Smith was treated and released; Pflughoeft has been admitted, though her condition is not known.
