WOLF DE-LISTED, AGAIN

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has again removed the gray wolf from the Endangered Species list in Wisconsin and other Great Lakes states.

The rules will go into effect in 30 days and will return regulation of the animals to state wildlife agencies.

That means the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will once again manage the wolf population, which last winter was estimated at 537 to 564.

In some cases, the DNR had issued permits to landholders to kill wolves that were killing or harassing livestock or pets.

Wolves were de-listed on March 12, 2007. But in September, a federal judge ruled that the regulations issued by the U.S. Interior Department were flawed.

That put the wolf back on the protected list.
