MILK PRODUCTION UP IN WISCONSIN
Friday, December 26th, 2008 -- 8:26 am
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

Milk production in Wisconsin rose 1% in November, statistics show.

The reason? Cows are working harder.

The average cow produced 1,565 pounds, 15 pounds more than a year ago. That translates to a total of 1.96 billion pounds last month.

There are also more dairy cows here. The total in the state was 1.25 million in November. That's 1,000 more than in the previous month, and 5,000 more than in the year-ago period.

Milk production was up 1% across the 23 major milk-producing states.

But production dipped in California, which is the nation's leading milk producer.

Production there dropped less than 1% last month compared to the same month last year.
