A Clark County Sheriff’s deputy likely saved a life yesterday.

At around 2:30 p.m., dispatchers received a report of a car on fire in a field. It was located off of CTH H near Curley Creek Avenue in the Town of York.

It appeared the vehicle had traveled through the ditch for some time before coming to rest in a wooded area.

Deputy Dawn Jacobson was first on the scene and ran out to the vehicle. She found the male operator struggling to get out. An 81-year-old Willard man had the driver's door open with one leg outside the vehicle, but was tangled in his seatbelt.

With flames starting to engulf the passenger-side, Jacobson was able to pull Hoffmann out of his seatbelt and get him to safety.

Jacobson had her gloves and jacket singed from the flames. The man was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield and later to the Burn Center in Madision. His condition is unknown.

Investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing.
