Friday was another big step in the process of creating a new tribute at the Highground Veterans Memorial Park.

A hardy group was on hand to officially welcome the bronze GI statue; which will be part of the new Fountain of Tears project.

The life-size statue is the work of noted La Crosse sculptor Michael Martino, who also designed the Korean Tribute.

Separate statuary, depicting a woman and child accepting an American Flag, is slated to arrive in February.

The Tribute will be dedicated on Memorial Day, May 25th.

Volunteer General Manager Kirk Rodman says the tribute will cost around $125,000. Most of that money is already raised.
