GANNETT ANNOUNCES CUTS
Thursday, December 4th, 2008 -- 11:34 am Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director
A 10% work force cut at the nation's largest newspaper company, Gannett Co., will mean layoffs for area newspapers.
Across Gannett's 10 Wisconsin markets with daily newspapers, 74 employees were laid off, with 18 more vacancies created by attrition or by leaving positions unfilled.
The company's 10 Wisconsin newspapers are in Appleton, Green Bay, Oshkosh, Manitowoc, Fond du Lac, Sheboygan, Marshfield, Wausau, Stevens Point and Wisconsin Rapids.
The current downturn in the economy is to blame for more job losses in our area.
The cuts which will begin this week will include 11 positions at the Wausau Daily Herald, 2 at the Stevens Point Journal, 1 at the Marshfield News Herald and 1 at the Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune.
