LOYAL MAY BACK AWAY FROM MANURE ORDINANCE

It looks like the City of Loyal might back off from an ordinance requiring horses to be equipped with manure-catching devices.

They’ve been called "horse diapers".

The Amish community reacted strongly after the ordinance was adopted a couple weeks ago, threatening to take their business elsewhere.

This week’s TRG says Amish leaders have met with business leaders and a compromise was hammered out.

The Police Committee has also met and unanimously recommended the Council rescind their horse-diaper ordinance.

Under the compromise, horse-drawn vehicles will have to limit their travels to specified routes. The idea is similar to a “gentleman’s agreement” reached in 2002. But that agreement was never followed, city officials say.

By putting the agreement into an ordinance, city police will be able fine violators.

The Council meets on Tuesday.
