SEX OFFENDERS HAVE SPECIAL HALLOWEEN RULES

Friday is Halloween.

Neillsville Police Chief Brad Lindner says registered sex offenders do have special rules during trick-or-treat hours.

"(They) have special rules put on by their probation and parole agents. Those under the supervision of the Department of Corrections are not allowed to participate in any holiday event," Lindner explains, "They're supposed to be in the residence one hour prior to the event to one hour after the event, have their lights off and not partake at all."

There are 14 registered sex offenders in our area, but only one is still on probation.

However, the city of Neillsville has their own ordinance banning sex offenders from participating in holiday events.

While sex offenders have been getting a lot more publicity in recent years, they’ve been around forever and that fact shouldn’t prevent families from having a good time.

"It should not prevent any parent or kids from having a good time during these events, they should just be taking normal safety precautions that they should be taking everyday," he says.

He encourages parents to accompany small children, set time limits for kids heading out on their own and use costumes with bright colors.

Here in Neillsville, firefighters will be out and about helping kids at busy corners.
