Health officials are encouraging people to vaccinate against the flu.

Flu shot clinics are starting to pop up around the state.

Influenza activity usually begins in November and peaks in February.

Children, adults older than 50, and those with compromised immune systems are especially at risk of contracting influenza.

A new immunization is needed each year because a new vaccine is developed for each season as influenza viruses change.

Symptoms and complications of influenza are more severe than those of a cold.

Influenza viruses infect the respiratory tract. It usually begins suddenly and symptoms include fever, headache, malaise, cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, and body aches.
