Hundreds of people were on hand Friday for the dedication of the $40-million Laird Center for Medical Research at the Marshfield Clinic.

The facility, named after former Defense Secretary, Republican Congressman and Marshfield native Melvin Laird, aims to get medical research findings to physicians and patients.

Governor Doyle took the opportunity to announce the new “Wisconsin Genomic Initiative,” an ambitious plan to link four partners in Milwaukee, Madison and Marshfield to further advances in personalized health care.

"The work that will be done in Wisconsin labs and clinics over the next two years will unlock doors we never thought possible," Doyle proclaimed, "Meeting a personal health care need that will save lives and provide better futures for people with chronic diseases, like diabetes and cancers."

Instead of treating health conditions, researchers believe they will soon be able to use information from genes to predict and prevent the diseases from occurring.

"The research going on here in Marshfield is going to be linked to research going on in Madison and Milwaukee, all working collaboratively, making Wisconsin the absolute leader in the development of personalized medicine: the kind of medicine where they'll be able to tell what your specific needs are."

The Marshfield Clinic, University of Wisconsin, The Medical College of Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee comprise the “Wisconsin Genomic Initiative”.
