Hundreds of people were on hand Friday for the dedication of the $40-million Laird Center for Medical Research at the Marshfield Clinic.

The facility, named after former Defense Secretary, Republican Congressman and Marshfield native Melvin Laird, will more efficiently move medical research findings to physicians and patients.

The “Man from Marshfield” attended the event, along with dozens of dignitaries and research leaders.

Laird has devoted his life to medical research and causes.

Gov. Jim Doyle knows him well. His wife, Jessica, is Laird’s niece and grew up in Marshfield.

"When discussing with Pres. Kennedy this challenge to put a man on a moon, Melvin Laird said to Pres. Kennendy, 'If I had a choice between a moon walk or the life of a child with Luekemia, I would never glance upward," Doyle related, "It is an incredible set of values he's taken from Marshfield and taken across the world."

Laird, was moved by the occasion.

"All the research in the world is not worth very much if you don't get it to patients," Laird noted, "I'm very proud of what the Clinic has done and what they're promoting all over the United States."

The concept is to house researchers, scientists and physicians under one roof to allow for more efficient sharing of data.
