MARATHON CO. FARMERS ACCUSED OF WATERING DOWN MILK

A group of dairy producers and their milk hauler allegedly worked together to water down their milk to inflate their milk checks.

According to officials, the eight men will appear in Marathon County Circuit Court, where they'll face multiple felony charges of theft and false representation. Wisconsin Ag Connection is reporting, a criminal complaint states the group's actions resulted in over-payment of more than $500,000 as they shipped the watered-down milk to Mullins Cheese in Knowlton. Some of the defendants admitted to the accusations, saying the practice has been going on since last summer. Another farmer said he's been adding water to his tank for more than 35 years. The milk hauler also admitted to mixing samples from other patrons so the diluted milk would not show up in the company's tests.
