A vehicle struck a telephone pole and caused a major power outage Monday morning in Neillsville.

It happened just before 9 a.m. on West 5th street near St. John's Lutheran Church on Neillsville's west side.

The driver, Richard Christie Jr., told authorities he lost the ability to steer the vehicle, left the roadway and toppled a pole. He suffered minor injuries.

An Xcel Energy spokesperson said 1,141 customers were without power. Crews were on the scene as of 9:30.

Power was restored to most city residents at around 11:30 a.m.
