MILWAUKEE CO. EXEC VISITS NEILLSVILLE

A big name in the Wisconsin Republican Party rolled into Neillsville Tuesday morning.

Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker is traveling the state (ala Tommy Thompson) promoting tourism in southeastern Wisconsin.

Donning a black leather vest and a yellow Brewers cap, Walker and a group of 50 other motorcyclists stopped at the Highground Veterans Memorial Park.

"We've come here before to the Highground and it was really kind of special," Walker said, "It's solemn but yet interesting."

Walker says he's excited that Harley-Davidson will open their museum this summer, but admits times are tough for the company that's the face of the state's largest city.

"It's the same as it is with American automobile manufacturers. It's tough, the economy is down and people don't have a lot of disposable income," Walker laments, "Thankfully, they diversified and have interest across the globe, not just the country."

Walker, a Republican, ran for governor in 2004 and is widely considered the front-runner of the Republican field for 2010.

"Who knows about that," Walker said, "Our challenge is the same as smaller counties: the state hasn't done enough to balance things out. We're mandated to social services and the justice system."
