STRAY VOLTAGE CASES GOING TO TRIAL

Two high-profile stray voltage lawsuits involving area farmers are headed to jury trials next year.
Clark County farmers Ralph and Karline Schmidt and Marathon County farmers August and Joanne Heeg sued Northern States Power (NSP), now known as XCEL Energy, for losses they say were caused by stray voltage.
While the "injuries" date back to the early 1990s, the civil suits weren't filed until 2001.
Originally dismissed by Clark County Circuit Court Judge Jon Counsell, who ruled the statute of limitations had expired, the cases were reinstated on appeal.
This morning (Monday), a substitute judge from Wood County scheduled three-week jury trials for June of 2009 in the Heeg case, and October of 2009 in the Schmidt case.
