WANTED: STORM SPOTTERS
Thursday, April 17th, 2008 -- 11:44 am
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

Next week is Severe Weather Awareness week. The National Weather Service relies on technology to predict where and when storms will hit, but still needs the public's help.

Next week, the NWS will hold a free Storm Spotter at the American Legion here in Neillsville Thursday night at 6:30 p.m.

"A storm spotter is basically someone that works with us in observing clouds as they come in, looking for tornado formations, hail size, wind gusts, rainfall," explains Todd Shea of the National Weather Service in La Crosse, "More of the hazardous weather elements to help our warnings be a little more timely and accurate."

Participants will learn about severe weather, including cloud formations that might indicate nasty weather.

"Maybe a more famous cloud formation that we go over is the wall cloud," Shea notes, "It's kinf of an isolated or lowering area, sometimes near the back of thunderstorms, that can be a precursor to tornado activity."

The Clark County classes are usually some of the best-attended in the state.
