BUSH, PETRAEUS OPPOSE REDEPLOYMENT

The chances over 3,000 soldiers from around Wisconsin—including those based in Neillsville—will be sent to the Middle East next year appear better after testimony on Capitol Hill this week.

President Bush Thursday ordered an indefinite halt in the U.S. Troop withdrawals from Iraq after July. The action followed testimony from Gen. David Petraeus.

Bush's decisions virtually guarantee a major U.S. presence in Iraq throughout his term in office in January, when a new president takes office.

In December, the Pentagon announced the 32nd Brigade Combat Team will be deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Their duties will likely involve route security in Iraq and Kuwait.

Most of these unties have already served one tour of duty in the Middle East. The Brigade has units in 36 Wisconsin communities, including Neillsville, Eau Claire, Wisconsin Rapids, Mosinee, Marshfield, Stevens Point, Abbotsford and Arcadia.

Neillsville's unit is authorized for up to 80 soldiers.
