"DEER HIDES FOR THE BLIND" RAISES MONEY FOR GOOD CAUSE

You may have seen them about town: trailers with signs that say “Deer Hides For The Blind”.

Ben Urlaub and "Bunny" Oldham co-chair the Neillsville-area Deer Hide project. Urlaub says they usually collect over 600 deer hides from area hunters as part of the project spearheaded by the Thorp Lions Club.

"The Thorp Lions run the program," explains Urlaub, "It's for all the Lions Clubs in Central Wisconsin. I think we got about 4,000 hides last year and we raised $38,000."

Urlaub says the money goes to support Camp Rosholt; a camp for blind and physically handicapped children.

Urlaub says the hides are salted and paletted and then auctioned off to the highest bidder; they usually bring $7 to $8 a piece. He credits area hunters for being very generous by turning down the money they could receive for the deer hides to help a worthwhile project.
