OFFICIALS: WISCONSIN ELK HERD STRONG
Tuesday, April 1st, 2008 -- 11:02 am
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

A state biologist says Wisconsin's elk herd is strong, despite wolf attacks that have killed some of the animals in recent months.

Five elk of a herd of about 130 were killed by wolves in the Clam Lake area.

The five were males, who instinctively draw predators away from the breeding females, officials say.

The elk, bigger and hardier than deer, withstood the harsh winter.

About 40 newborn calves are expected this spring; it would be the largest number in the 12-year history of the transplanted elk herd.
