SELF-DEFENSE TRAINING OFFERED

April is just a few days away.

That month is set aside as Sexual Assault Awareness Month and a local group is offering free self-defense awareness training to mark the occasion.

"It's definitely a bigger issue than anybody thinks," explains Lori Tully with the Clark County Domestic Violence Outreach Project. She says many sexual assault cases go unreported because of fear, embarrassment and shame.

"Especially if it's somebody that you're living with, or if it's a boyfriend or girlfriend. That adds another factor into it, as far as you don't want to get that person in trouble, or your afraid to tell because then they're going to get mad at you," Tully notes.

But, after victims come forward, they can get their lives back together, Tully says.

While statistics show most victims are abused by people they know, the self-defense training will teach participants how to prevent "surprise" attacks.

"It also helps no matter who grabs your arm. These are ways you can get away."

The classes are free and will be held in Thorp, Abbotsford and Neillsville. If you would like more information, you should call Lori at 743-6401.
