CULTURAL FAIR COMING TO MARSHFIELD

With a stated goal to "bring ethnic minorities into the community mainstream", the Marshfield Cultural Fair is coming up this Saturday.
"It was put together by a small group of people who really wanted to make the folks in Marshfield and the surrounding areas more aware of the cultural diversity that we already have, and make everyone more aware of their neighbors and help understand them better," explains Julie Tharp, who helps organize the event.
The Cultural Fair will be held at the UW-Marshfield/Wood County from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, February 23.
The theme this year is One Home, One Earth.
There will be food, film and performances, says Tharp.
"The perennial favorite are the belly dancers," she says. "The organizer is most proud of the Mariachi Band that’s coming up from Wisconsin Rapids this year. It’s a 17 piece band and they’re promising to blow the house down."
People can also sample cuisine from Poland, Germany, China, Thailand, Italy, France and other destinations.
And there will be a unique shopping experience.
"The Ten Thousand Villages is a cooperative that will bring craft projects from around the world directly from the consumer without the middle-man cut," Tharp raves. "You get really excellent deals on jewelry, baskets, pottery—all sorts of wonderful things."
