ASSAULT TRIAL UNDERWAY FOR KOHL
Tuesday, January 15th, 2008 -- 12:18 pm
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

Jury selection is underway this morning for a Granton man accused of sexually assaulting two 8-year-old neighbor girls over ten years ago.

59-year-old Stephen Kohl is facing four counts of 1st degree sexual assault of a child. Each count carries a maximum penalty of 40 years behind bars.

He's accused of improperly touching two sisters who lived right down the road and would often come to his home to play with his daughters.

The alleged assaults took place in 1996, but the girls didn't work up enough courage to come forward until 2005, according to court documents.

The trial was supposed to start in June, but Kohl failed to show and eluded authorities until September, when he was apprehended thanks to an anonymous tip.

The trial is scheduled to run through Friday.
