FEWER WOLVES SHOT THIS HUNTING SEASON

The state's wolf management coordinator says only one wolf was shot during this fall's deer hunt in Wisconsin, dramatically fewer than a year ago.
Adrian Wydeven of the state Department of Natural Resources says the dramatic drop-off from nine killed a year ago is evidence that removing all federal protections for the animal has eased some landowner frustrations.
The federal government removed the gray wolf from its endangered lists in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan in March. That decision handed over management of the population to state and tribal governments, which could authorize the killing of problem wolves.
Wydeven says the wolf killed during the deer hunt was found in Oneida County and genetic testing indicated the 5-year-old female was wolf-dog hybrid.
