WOOD CO. TO STEP UP TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT

Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

The Wood County Sheriff's Department is one of several law enforcement agencies in Wisconsin participating in the voluntary Booze and Belts mobilization next week.

$quot;Some departments will be chosen and given a grant of about $4,000 to be put toward equipment,$quot; explains Sgt. Lee Garrels. $quot;The main thing is to stress during the holiday season the reduction in drunk driving and up the use of safety belts and child restraints.$quot;

For their part, Wood County plans to have more deputies on the roads working longer hours.

$quot;We'll designation certain officers to work certain times of the day in areas we know from history are high-volume areas that need a little extra patrol,$quot; Garrels says.

Traffic crashes kill betwen 700 and 800 men, women and children in Wisconsin each year and cause more than 50,000 injuries. While around 75-percent of Wisconsinites use seatbelts, that's still below the national average of 82-percent.
