CHOPPERS TO INSPECT POWER LINES
Monday, October 15th, 2007 -- 11:27 am
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

Xcel Energy is warning folks not to be alarmed if they see low-flying, slow-moving helicopters hovering about for the next four to five weeks.

Beginning today (Monday), the choppers will be flying over some neighborhoods and rural locations inspecting major electric transmission lines.

The flights enable Xcel Energy to gather structure location information as well as to conduct visual inspections of equipment for defects or loose fittings. Trouble spots that could cause power outages will be identified and repaired.

The patrols will take place during daylight hours and the helicopter will fly within 50 feet of the lines, or hover near a transmission structure if something needs a closer look.

Typically, the flights are conducted at speeds of 30 - 40 miles per hour.
