VIOLENT FELONS REGISTRY PROPOSED
Wednesday, October 10th, 2007 -- 3:02 pm
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

From WRN

Rep. Scott Suder (R-Abbotsford) introduced a new bill Tuesday that would create an Internet registry of violent felons. The registry would give Wisconsinites the heads-up when violent criminals move into their neighborhoods, so they can protect themselves. It would be similar to the sex offender registry.

Suder says offenders would register themselves and the Department of Corrections would be responsible for maintaining the site.

Suder says five states currently have similar laws. "Leah's Law" is named on behalf of Leah Gustafson - a woman from Superior who was murdered by her own collector-sword last year at the hands of a man who moved-in across the street from her. Democrat Frank Boyle of Superior and Republican Sue Jeskewitz of Menomonee Falls join Suder in introducing the bill.
