Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

A court-hired psychiatrist is requesting more time to determine if a Neillsville man is competent to stand trial on charges he stabbed his wife to death.

A judge was to rule on Daniel Peterson's competentency to stand trial Thursday, but in a memo dated September 18th, Dr. Erik Knudson says he would like to examine Mr. Peterson over an extended period of time.

Knudson acknowledges previous examiners have “differed regarding their opinions about the validity of Peterson’s reported symptoms of mental illness”. He calls the defendant’s clinical history “complex”.

Peterson was recently admitted to Mendota Health Institute for examination.

Prosecutors allege Peterson murdered his wife Vickie at the couple’s Ayres Street, Neillsville home. The alleged murder occurred either December 31st, 2003 or early in the morning of January 1st, 2004

The competency hearing has been rescheduled for November 22nd, according to on-line court records.
