WEATHER HARD ON CRANBERRIES
Friday, August 25th, 2006 -- 2:11 pm Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director
Cranberry growers in Jackson and Monroe counties hope the recent hail storms don’t "bog" them down too much, but one grower estimates up to 60-percent of their berries were knocked off the vine during storms on Wednesday and Thursday. Jim VanWychen has a bog about 4½ miles east of Warrens. He says they’ll be checking the sugar content of the berries – if it’s high enough for processing for juice, they’ll have to flood the beds earlier than usual to salvage the knocked-off berries. Van Whychen says this is only the 2nd time in 34 years that hail has caused this much damage.
