A new Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance report shows Neillsville’s spending habits are generally in-line with the averages for similar-sized communities. The “Municipal Facts” report uses data from 2004. The bottom line: Neillsville’s 2004 municipal per capita tax levy was $339, about $4 below the statewide average of $343 per person. The study finds Neillsville spent about $65 per person on general government, a drop of 8-percent between 2000 and 2004, and below the statewide average of $82 per person. Neillsville does spend more for police protection. In 2004, each city resident spent about $166 for police protection, an increase of 46-percent during the four year period and slightly above the statewide average of $157. The City’s overall spending per capita – referred to as “operating spending”- was $750, $160 above the statewide average.
