RECALL REQUIREMENTS TO EASE

Soon, unhappy voters won't have to gather as many signatures to trigger a recall election against a city, village, town or school district official. And they'll have twice as much time to do it under a state statue change that goes into effect next Saturday.

Currently, petitioners must get signatures equal to at least 25 percent of the votes cast for president during the last election within the same territory.

The change will allow petitioners to collect signatures equal to at least 25 percent of the votes cast for governor during the last election. And they'll have 60 days to do it instead of 30.

Kristofer Frederick, of the State Elections Board, doesn't foresee more recalls. He says people who launch recalls typically are so fired up that the number of signatures isn't a prime consideration.
