RACE ACROSS AMERICA UPDATE
Thursday, June 15th, 2006 -- 8:34 am
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

This is an animated map produced by Race Across America. Tom's Team will be denoted by an orange square when the race spreads out:

It was a productive night for Tom Kingsbury of Loyal who continues to cross the country in the Race Across America bicycle race.

Team Volae Wolf Pack crossed Arizona and moved into Utah overnight.

They reached their latest checkpoint at 6:45 this morning.

The 54-year old Kingsbury began the race Tuesday at 4 p.m. CST near San Diego, California. He and riding partner Tim Woudenberg continue to make good time – they’ve now traveled over 720 miles and are averaging 18.7 mph.

In order to complete the race in seven days (a goal for Team Volae), they will have to maintain a pace of between 18-19 mph – so they’re still on target.

Interesting sidenotes:
  • Historically, only 50% of the riders finish the course
  • Race leader and two-time defending Solo Champ Race leader Jure Robic has dropped out due to pneumonia
  • A wildfire in the Flagstaff, AZ, caused delays and reroutes for many riders Wednesday
