REFERENDUM IN NEILLSVILLE'S FUTURE
Monday, June 12th, 2006 -- 11:52 am
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

Faced with a steep enrollment drop, the Neillsville School District may be the next to face a revenue cap exemption referendum.

The school board may elect to move forward with the referendum when they meet tonight (Monday).

The ’06-’07 school year will be the first in a projected four-year slide. Enrollment for the recently completed school year sat at 1,122; projections for the next school year show the headcount will drop 50 to 70 students.

That could mean a $200,000 drop in state aid next year alone.

The earliest they would hold the referendum is during the September 12th Primary Election. In order to hold the referendum then, a resolution would need to be passed by July 29th, according to Neillsville administrator John Gaier.

The referendum is being explored to maintain current programs without increasing, or creating fees for things like Drivers Education and extracurricular activities, Gaier says.
