Law enforcement agencies throughout the state concluded their annual "Click It or Ticket" seatbelt enforcement campaigns on Sunday.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Department was one of approximately 330 Wisconsin law enforcement agencies participating in the national mobilization from May 22 through June 4.

"We're attempting to get motorist to wear their seatbelts because they definitely save lives," says Clark County Sheriff Louis Rosandich.

In 2005, there were 28 seatbelt citations handed out; already this year, local officers have issued 28 $10 citatons.

"In the event you're involved in a crash, you're safer inside the vehicle than you are if you're thrown out. You stand a better chance of surviving," Rosandich says. "A lot of our fatal accidents occur when an occupant is thrown from the vehicle."

Pick-up truck drivers and passengers have the lowest seat belt use rates of all motorists. A 2005 survey reported that only 58% of pick-up truck occupants in Wisconsin were buckled up. In comparison, 80% of mini-van occupants were buckled up.
